As many as six police personnel were suspended and five have been arrested in the alleged custodial death of Ajith Kumar, a security guard at a famous temple in Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district, ANI reported citing the Tamil Nadu government.

A criminal case was filed based on the findings of the autopsy at the Tirupuvanam Police Station under Section 196(2)(a) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act and has been forwarded for judicial investigation.

The 27-year-old security guard allegedly died after being tortured by six policemen of a “special team”. The accused cops were probing Ajith’s role in the theft of 10 sovereigns of gold, which went missing from a car outside the temple premises. The complaint in this regard was filed by a mother-daughter duo.

The post-mortem suggested Ajith had 15 external injury marks, besides several internal injuries. His brother Naveen Kumar, who was also detained by the “special team” on similar charges as those of the deceased, said his brother was brutally beaten in front of him. He said Ajith was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.

“We don’t need any money. We need justice for my brother. He did no wrong, but was killed by police based on an oral complaint by two women,” the Deccan Herald quoted him as saying.

AIADMK has rebuked the Stalin-led government, alleging that it was the 25th ‘custodial murder’ since DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu.

"This is not a custodial death. This is the 25th custodial murder since DMK came to power. Ajith Kumar, a security guard with the temple and his brother, who had been called for an inquiry, were exposed to brutality. Ajith Kumar succumbed to the police brutality within the police station itself, and there is a blatant cover-up of evidence that relates to brutality, such as the plastic pipes, chilli powders, and iron rods, which were all removed from the scene. This clearly indicates how rattled the entire scenario is with respect to the police force handling Ajith Kumar... We expect a transparent probe, but however, having known that the last 24 murders, there is no headway, this will be another big cover up from the DMK, but definitely those who are behind will be brought to justice, and AIADMK will stand by those people who demand justice, particularly the Ajith Kumar's family," AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan said.
