Tamil Nadu Custodial Death: Post-mortem report of Ajith Kumar, a victim of custodial death, revealed that he was brutally tortured before death. According to the post-mortem report, there are 44 injuries on his body. The report also confirms brain damage and internal bleeding accompanied by deep, linear muscle-level contusions from 7 cm to 16 cm length.
The brain tissue was also congested, which indicates trauma to the head. The bleeding was found on the back wall of the left ventricle of the heart, along with the stomach region. The injuries are consistent with repeated physical assault using objects like a stick, rod, and baton.
He had multiple abrasions with dark red scabs on his forehead, eyebrow, right cheek, left elbow, forearm, upper chest, wrist, right leg, and ankle. Injuries were also noted on both sides of his head.
According to the report, the autopsy was performed over 18 hours after Ajith was brought dead to the government hospital, after the usual working hours of forensic surgeons.
On June 29, the procedure went on for over three hours from 5:45 PM to 9:20 PM. 27-year-old Ajith worked as a security guard at a temple in Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu. He was held by the police on charges of theft. However, he later died in custody, allegedly due to torture and beating by police personnel.
Taking action, the Tamil Nadu government suspended all six personnel, and five were arrested. The case prompted a political clash between the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK. AIADMK termed the death 'custodial murder', saying, "This is not a custodial death. This is the 25th custodial murder since DMK came to power."
The case reached the Madras High Court's Madurai Bench, which on July 1 observed that even a murderer wouldn't have inflicted this much injury to a person while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
