Nine Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were attacked and robbed by suspected Sri Lankan pirates while fishing near the east of Kodiakkarai coast in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night, police said on Wednesday. This is the sixth such attack on Tamil fishermen in the past two months.

Police said that N Subramanian( 50), A Murugesan (45), A Sundaramoorthy (49), C Rajagopal (63 ) and S. Mahalingam (60), all natives of Vanavanmahadevi near Vedaranyam had ventured into the sea on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Fishermen told police that while they were fishing in mid-sea off Kodiakkarai coast, four men allegedly Sri Lankans, who were speaking Tamil, intercepted them and two persons boarded the boat and attacked the fishermen and tied three of them to the boat. They also took away the fishing net, GPS system, torches, catches and other gadgets in their speed boat.

The fishermen managed to escape and reach the shore on Wednesday morning. They were admitted to Government Medical College, Nagapattinam with injuries where they underwent treatment.

The increase in intensity of such attacks in the past two months has raised concerns about the safety of such fishermen in the region. Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
