A 54-year-old woman was allegedly set ablaze by her colleague at an LIC office in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, in a bid to hide financial irregularities, police said. The accused, identified as T. Ram, an Assistant Administrative Officer with LIC, has been arrested in connection with the case.
According to Jagran.com, the victim, Kalyani Nambi, died in an incident that occurred in December 2025 at the LIC office located on West Perumal Maistry Street. At the time, the fire was initially suspected to have been caused by an air-conditioner short circuit. However, subsequent investigation revealed that it was a premeditated murder.

Police said Kalyani had recently been transferred to Madurai from Tirunelveli. After joining, she reportedly noticed serious lapses in the settlement of death claims, with more than 40 cases allegedly pending due to Ram’s negligence. When she warned him of possible disciplinary action, he allegedly decided to eliminate her.
Investigators found that Ram had planned the crime in advance. He allegedly stored petrol, cut off the office power supply, locked the main door from outside, and trapped Kalyani inside her cabin before setting her on fire.
During the investigation, Ram’s statements were found to be contradictory. He later confessed that he feared losing his job and intended to destroy official records along with killing Kalyani. Police also said he tried to injure himself after the incident to make it appear accidental, but survived.
Ram was arrested on January 17, 2026, and is currently in custody while undergoing treatment at a hospital. He has been booked under multiple sections, including murder, destruction of evidence, and giving false information to authorities.
In a separate incident, A man allegedly stabbed his eight-month pregnant sister-in-law to death during a domestic dispute late Friday night, after which the accused and other male family members went absconding. The victim’s father has alleged that the murder was the result of a conspiracy by her in-laws, while police have launched a search for those involved.
The incident occurred around 9 pm under Vishunpura police station limits when the victim, Rinki, was attacked by her brother-in-law Tuntun inside the house. She was rushed to the district hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Rinki was due to deliver later this month and is survived by two young children. Police said the exact reason behind the dispute is under investigation.
