Chennai: Tambaram City Commissioner Abin Dinesh Modak announced on Tuesday that a large-scale anti-narcotics raid was conducted on Saturday (July 26, 2025) around educational institutions in Potheri, Maraimalai Nagar, Kattankulathur, and nearby areas. During the operation, authorities seized 166 grams of ganja, 5,000 ganja-infused chocolates, and arrested seven individuals.

Tambaram City Police Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak stated on Tuesday that the police are not targeting any particular educational institution. He added that similar raids would be conducted near other institutions as well, based on specific intelligence inputs. The operation involved multiple police teams led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Pawan Kumar Reddy and included around 100 officers and personnel.

"On July 26, we conducted a massive raid around the Education Institutions in Potheri, Maraimalai Nagar and Kattankulathur and the surrounding area. The main intention of these raids were to ensure that the premises near the education institutions are clean and there is no infestation of drugs around that. We seized 166 grams of ganja, 5000 ganja chocolates. We have also arrested seven people," Abin Dinesh Modak said. 

Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak said that over 340 cases have been registered this year, with the majority occurring near college premises. He added that 340 individuals have been arrested and more than 1,500 kilograms of ganja have been seized in the past seven months.

The raid was carried out simultaneously at 12 locations, including five apartment complexes, two individual houses where students of a private university reside, a pan stall, two petty shops, and a café.

Providing details of the operation, Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak said the police teams seized 166 grams of ganja, 5,250 ganja-laced chocolates, hookah-related items from unauthorized hookah centres, illicit tobacco products, and 10 mobile phones allegedly used in drug transactions.

According to the Hindu report, among those arrested were B.Tech Computer Science students from the second and fourth years. While the court granted bail to the students, a key accused, believed to be the kingpin operating from a petty shop, was remanded in custody.
