Tamil Nadu Train Accident News: In a tragic incident, the Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express train collided with a goods train at Kavaraipettai in Tamil Nadu's Thiruvallur district on Friday, leading to a fire in two passenger coaches. At least 12-13 coaches derailed in the incident and some people sustained injuries. Soon after receiving the information, Railway officials rushed to the spot. There have been no reports of casualties so far. 

Tiruvallur district collector T Prabhushankar, senior state officials and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Chennai, Southern Railway departed for the accident site. According to the officials, 12578 Mysore-Darbhanga Express collided with the goods train at Kavaraipettai at 8:50 PM and rescue teams and ambulances have been rushed to the spot.

"Train no. 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Express had rear collision with goods train at Kavaraippettai Railway Station around 20.30 hrs in Chennai-Guddur section between Ponneri- Kavarappettai railway stations (46 km from Chennai) of Chennai Division...Due to this, parcel van which was next to the Engine caught fire, which was doused by Fire brigade. Total 12-13 coaches have derailed. So far, no casualties are reported. All injured passengers are moved to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Train movement in both direction is closed," CPRO South Western Railway said in a statement.

“Six coaches of Train No.12578 (MYS-DBG) Mysore to Darbhanga were derailed after it collided with a goods train at around 20.30 hours. No causalities were reported. A few people were injured. The medical relief van and rescue team have started to move from Chennai Central,” Southern Railway earlier said in a statement. 

The incident took place in Kavarapettai, which comes under Chennai Railway Division, when train number 12578, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Superfast Express, experienced a severe jerk and reportedly entered a loop line, colliding with a stationary goods train at a speed of 90-100 km/h.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stallin Reacts

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock over the train accident and said that he is monitoring the rescue operations. "I was shocked to know that there was a train accident in Kavaripettai, Tiruvallur district.  As soon as the information was available, I ordered Minister SM Nasar and other government officials including the District Collector to go to the accident site. The government is working fast in rescue and relief work," Stalin wrote on X. 

"The injured are immediately taken to the hospital. A separate team is functioning to arrange food and travel facilities for the other passengers to return home. The fire department is engaged in the work of removing the accident train coaches. I am continuing to monitor the rescue operations," he added.

Following the incident, a few trains including Tamil Nadu Express bound To Delhi from Chennai Central are cancelled. Meanwhile, teams from the MAS Division, including the Senior Deputy Electrical Engineer and other officials, have arrived at the site to carry out additional inspections and ensure passenger safety.

Following the incident, the Southern Railway took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share the helpline numbers.
