Tamil Nadu News: On Thursday morning, toxic foam accumulated on a road following heavy rainfall and water discharge from a nearby reservoir in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Rescue teams are working to clear the frothy substance, which reached about five feet in height. The road has been blocked and traffic has been diverted, according to Krishnagiri Superintendent of Police.
The foam originated from the Kelavarapalli dam, impacting agricultural lands along the Thenpennai river and releasing a foul odour that disrupted local commuters. The region received over 11 cm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, raising water levels in the Kelavarapalli reservoir. This led to the discharge of water into the river, resulting in the formation of toxic foam.

According to a DTNEXT report, the recent heavy rainfall in Karnataka has triggered the outflow from the Kelavarapalli dam. Unfortunately, the water has become contaminated with industrial effluents, a common issue during rainstorms when the river swells. While no official reports have confirmed the specific pollutants causing the foam, it is suspected that industrial units in Karnataka may have discharged waste into the river.
According to a report from Maalai Malar, the dam experienced an inflow of 1,718 cubic feet per second (cusecs) on Wednesday and released 1,670 cusecs into the river. On Thursday, a total of 4,160 cubic feet of water was discharged.
The foam has covered large areas of farmland, threatening crops and raising concerns among residents and farmers about the environmental impact. The rising foam has submerged parts of the access road, forcing commuters to take a detour that adds an extra 15 km to their journey. Local residents have voiced their worries over the toxic foam and the unpleasant smell it produces.
