Tamil Nadu Highway Project: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will carry out the construction of 963-km four-lane roads in the coming two years, giving a major boost to Tamil Nadu’s road transportation network. As per reports, the toll plazas on the national highway are likely to witness an increase from 72 to 90. The new roads will span 2,735 to 3,698 km and will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore.

Key Details On Total NH Network In Tamil Nadu

The total national highway network in Tamil Nadu expands up to 6,805 Km, reports stated.

These include:

1,282 Km Two-Lane Roads

2,383 Km Two-Lane Roads With Paved Shoulders,

384 Km Six-Lane Roads

21 Km Eight-Lane Roads

767 km of ongoing NH projects in state 60 per cent complete, to be operational within 12-15 months

When Will Six Four-Lane Projects Be Completed?

According to New Indian Express report, the total toll revenue collected from national highways in Tamil Nadu in the past ten years amounts to Rs 26,000 crores. Out of the 8 road projects being developed, the remaining work on the six four-lane projects is expected to be completed within one year.

These projects include:

Vikravandi-Thanjavur (163 km)

Mamallapuram-Puducherry East Coast Road (106 km)

Gudipala to Sriperumbudur (Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway) (106 km)
Nagapattinam-Thanjavur NH (65 km)

Dindigul-Pollachi (131.9 km)

Villupuram-Nagapattinam (125 km)

Additionally, the 135-km-long Dindigul-Theni-Kumuli and 60-km-long Neraluru-Thorapalli Agraharam-Jittandahalli roads have reached 20 to 30 per cent completion.

What’s Complete And What’s Left?

TNIE report reveals that the 963-km-long ongoing national highway projects are progressing at a steady rate. Out of the 963 Km, 767 Km is expected to be open to the public within the next year. The 131.9 km long four-lane Dindigul-Pollachi stretch is nearly complete. The Oddanchatram-Madathukulam section is already ready and a toll plaza is now operational at Chatrapatti.

The construction on the remaining sections, ‘Kamalapuram (Dindigul)-Oddanchatram and Madathukulam-Pollachi’ is progressing rapidly with toll plazas set to become operational at Paraipatti and Gomangalam very soon, reports added.
