Tamil Nadu Stampede: Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has spoken out following the stampede at his rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur that claimed 36 lives. Calling it the most painful moment of his political journey, Vijay expressed grief and solidarity with the affected families.

In his message on X (formerly Twitter), Vijay wrote “My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”

The tragedy unfolded during a TVK rally on Saturday evening, which had drawn tens of thousands of supporters. Police estimates put the crowd at over 30,000. Witnesses said sections of the gathering surged forward towards the stage, leading to a crush where several people fainted due to overcrowding and poor ventilation.

Tamil Nadu Stampede Death Toll

Officials confirmed that 36 people, including eight children and 16 women, died in the incident. More than 40 were injured and admitted to Karur Medical College Hospital, with some shifted to facilities in Erode and Tiruchirappalli.

Videos from the venue showed Vijay cutting his speech short as people collapsed in front of him. He was seen distributing water bottles and appealing for calm while ambulances and rescue teams struggled to reach the injured through the packed streets.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured,”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
