Tamil Nadu Stampede: Actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday reportedly moved to the Madras High Court seeking a probe into the Karur stampede. The court has allowed an urgent mention by the party seeking a suo motu cognisance into the matter, and the hearing is likely to be scheduled for tomorrow, Live Law reported. A deadly stampede broke out at Vijay's rally in Karur on Saturday, killing at least 40 and leaving more than 60 seriously injured. While the Tamil Nadu police have booked two close aides of Vijay for alleged negligence, the party has suspected a conspiracy and has sought investigation by an independent agency.
Earlier in August, TVK had approached the High Court seeking directions to the DGP to instruct all the officers to grant permissions for conducting campaigns in the state. "There was a conspiracy, a criminal conspiracy in the incident at Karur, so we requested the honorable high court to investigate the matter independently, not by state agency," TVK's lawyer Arivazhagan was quoted as saying by NDTV. "The court has to constitute a special investigation team, or they have to transfer the case from Tamil Nadu police to CBI," he added.
However, DGP in-charge G Venkatraman stated that several guidelines were violated during the event, adding that the crowd swelled due to the late arrival of Vijay. Venkatraman further stated that the youth and women remained hungry for several hours, leading to the panic.
"Permission (for the meeting) was sought for between 3 pm-10 pm. The TVK Twitter account said he will come at 12 and crowd started coming in from 11 AM. He came at 7.40 PM. The people lacked sufficient food water under the hot sun," Venkatraman was quoted as saying by PTI. "Our intention is not to blame anyone, but we are just stating the facts," the Head of Police Force added.
