Tamil Nadu Weather: A weather system over the Bay of Bengal has weakened from a deep depression into a depression and is likely to move towards Sri Lanka, bringing heavy rainfall to parts of Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

Heavy Rain Likely In THESE Tamil Nadu Districts

In its latest bulletin, the IMD stated that the system is expected to cross the north Sri Lanka coast later in the day. As a result, heavy rain is likely at isolated locations across several districts in Tamil Nadu. These include Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Karaikal, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur and Ramanathapuram.

The depression was last observed close to the Sri Lanka coast. It was positioned around 50 kilometres southeast of Mullaittivu, about 60 kilometres northeast of Trincomalee and nearly 140 kilometres southeast of Jaffna. The system was also located roughly 250 kilometres southeast of Karaikal and around 450 kilometres south-southeast of Chennai. Weather officials said it is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards before crossing the Sri Lanka coastline near Mullaittivu.

Tamil Nadu Weather: IMD Issues Wind And Sea Condition Warning

Sea conditions are expected to remain rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal and nearby Indian Ocean areas. The IMD said conditions may improve gradually after the system crosses land. Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may experience surface winds ranging between 35 and 45 kilometres per hour at times.

Tamil Nadu Weather: Fishermen Advised To Stay Off The Sea

Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea. Those already at sea have been asked to stay away from the southeast and southwest Bay of Bengal, the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin region.

Tamil Nadu Weather: Light Rain Expected In Chennai And Nearby Areas

Rainfall was reported in a few places over the past 24 hours. Tiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district, Ayinkudi in Pudukkottai and Grand Anicut in Thanjavur district recorded one centimetre of rain each.

For Chennai and nearby areas, the IMD forecast cloudy skies with light rain likely at some locations.
