Chennai Weather: Chennai is preparing for heavy rainfall today, Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange warning for several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu. These areas are expected to face severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms and lightning.

Tamil Nadu: IMD Weather Forecast

-Light to moderate rain will occur in many regions of North Coastal Tamil Nadu, as well as in some areas across the rest of the state.

- Thunderstorms and lightning are anticipated in isolated locations throughout Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

- Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted specifically for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts.

- Isolated areas in Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry may also see heavy rain.

Tamil Nadu School Closed

As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding school holidays in Tamil Nadu districts due to the expected rainfall. Students and parents are advised to contact their school administration for clarification regarding school and college closure.

Earlier this week, the Regional Meteorological Department downgraded its warning for heavy rainfall in Chennai and nearby districts. The revised forecast suggests heavy rain in isolated areas of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu, while light to moderate rain is expected across parts of North Coastal Tamil Nadu and certain isolated regions.

Low-Pressure System Development

A low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area. Forecasts suggest it will move northwest towards the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts within the next 24 hours, before shifting northward along the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Chennai Power Cut Today

On Thursday, power supply will be temporarily suspended in multiple areas of Chennai from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM for essential maintenance work.
