Chennai News: Chennai could soon get a break from the intense summer heat and humidity, with private weather forecasters predicting light rainfall next week. However, westerly winds are expected to strengthen, which may delay the arrival of the seabreeze that typically helps moderate temperatures. Meanwhile, several Tamil Nadu districts, including Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Kanniyakumari, Tiruvarur and Karaikal, may also witness rain.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperatures ranging from 37 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius for Sunday in Chennai and its suburbs. This is likely to cause discomfort, as temperatures in some areas may be 2-4 degrees above normal, combined with high humidity levels.

The Times Of India report cited, N Senthamarai Kannan, director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at the IMD, as explaining that, “There may not be any heat advection in Chennai and nearby coastal districts, while southern Tamil Nadu and parts of the Western Ghats could receive rainfall. This may help maintain the current weather conditions in the city. However, as May approaches, we might see a slight increase in temperatures.”

Chennai Weather

According to the IMD bulletin, skies are expected to be partly cloudy, with a minimum temperature around 29 degrees Celsius. Experts suggest that light rain could occur on April 28 and 29, due to a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area. However, significant rainfall is anticipated mainly in southern and interior Tamil Nadu.

The strengthening westerlies, which typically build up before the southwest monsoon, may delay the arrival of easterly winds that usually keep daytime temperatures in check. Even a minor delay can lead to a sharp increase in heat.

Chief meteorologist Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather noted that while Chennai may experience light rainfall on April 28-29, a gradual rise in daytime temperatures is likely afterwards.

Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast

Additionally, districts including Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Kanniyakumari, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal may experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The IMD has also cautioned that the rainfall could cause waterlogging and traffic disruptions in some areas.
