Chennai On Yellow Alert Today: The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rain in several states of Tamil Nadu for the next four days. This change in weather is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the sea.  

The districts which are likely to receive showers include Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram. Rain lashed several parts of Thoothukudi this morning.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for four districts in southern Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall. However, for Chennai, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert today. The city is expected to experience partly cloudy skies with a chance of moderate rain or thunderstorms. Starting tomorrow, Chennai is likely to have mostly cloudy skies.

The inclement weather in the state has been attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and southwest Bay of Bengal. Districts— Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi— are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain, while districts— Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvarur are also expected to receive heavy showers.  

According to reports, temperatures are expected to drop after Tuesday. In light of this forecast, the state government is contemplating declaring holidays for schools and colleges in affected districts. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions due to the heavy rainfall.

On the other hand, dry weather is anticipated in the state starting Thursday, March 13, with no significant change in the maximum temperature over the next three days. The mercury is likely to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above the usual levels.
