Tamil Naidu Weather: Chennai is expected to get heavy showers over the next few days, with the city expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has warned that skies will remain overcast, and intermittent downpours could cause localized flooding, especially in low-lying parts of the city. With a developing weather system gaining strength over the Bay of Bengal, residents are being urged to stay alert and avoid waterlogged areas.

This warning comes as a low-pressure system is forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal, expected to develop between October 21 and 24. Meteorologists say that an existing low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea, combined with upper-level atmospheric circulation over the southern Andaman Sea, is setting the stage for widespread rain across Tamil Nadu.

Over the next 24 hours, the system is likely to intensify and drift northwest, gradually gaining strength over the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal. This movement is prompting the RMC to issue an orange alert for multiple districts.

As a result, the weather office has issued an orange alert for seven districts Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Cuddalore warning of extremely heavy rain on Monday (October 21).

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Sivaganga districts during the same period.

The alert continues into Tuesday, October 22, for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai, while other districts like Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tirupattur could also see heavy rainfall.

On Wednesday, October 23, the intensity is expected to increase further in Chennai and surrounding areas, with very heavy rainfall forecast for Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and Vellore. Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, and Villupuram may also experience heavy showers.

By Thursday, October 24, rain is predicted to intensify across a broader region, including Tirupattur, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Dharmapuri.

In Chennai, the sky will remain generally cloudy, with moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected in several areas, according to the RMC. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain vigilant and avoid waterlogged zones, as continuous rainfall may lead to flooding in parts of northern Tamil Nadu and the Delta region over the coming days.
