Heavy rain lashed Chennai on Wednesday, causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions at various locations. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu’s capital city and neighbouring districts until December 2.

The regional met centre issued an Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 2 and 3 for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts. The delta and coastal districts are also likely to receive heavy rainfall in the upcoming days.

“Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and neighbourhood in the lower tropospheric levels and the above Low-Pressure System, light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal with isolated heavy rain over the coastal and adjoining districts during November 29 to December 3, 2023,” a bulletin by Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai said.

Due to the constant heavy rain, several areas including Chromepet, Killambakkam and roads between Shollinganallur and Chennai One IT Park were waterlogged which caused heavy traffic congestion. In some places, ankle-deep water was stagnant, after which commuters faced difficulties in reaching their destinations on time.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) posted on X stating that the officials were on the ground, working to manage the sudden downpour after some locals shared videos of the waterlogged roads in different locations on social media platforms.

The rain is due to a cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The weather department said that for the next 24 hours, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy and intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning are likely to occur in some areas.
