Chennai Weather: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai and its neighbouring districts, warning of possible heavy rainfall on July 17. A very heavy rain alert has also been issued for The Nilgiris and the Ghat regions of Coimbatore due to a change in wind patterns.
According to officials, light to moderate winds from the west are currently influencing weather conditions in the lower troposphere, leading to widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu. The RMC said isolated areas in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpattu, Theni, Tenkasi and the hill areas of Coimbatore and The Nilgiris could receive heavy rain on July 17.
From July 18 to 22, The Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain. Districts including Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Dindigul, Theni and Tenkasi may also receive significant rainfall until July 20, while Kanniyakumari and Tirunelveli could see heavy showers on July 21 and 22.
Despite rainfall activity, RMC warned that daytime temperatures are expected to rise 2 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius above normal levels across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. In some places, high humidity combined with soaring temperatures may cause discomfort.
The department attributed the rains to fluctuations in the westerly wind’s speed, which is expected to bring rainfall to several parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days.
Tamil Nadu Weather Forecast:
July 17: Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Strong surface winds up to 50 kmph are expected. Heavy rainfall is forecast in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Vellore, The Nilgiris, Coimbatore (Ghat areas) and other districts.
July 18: Similar conditions will prevail with heavy rain in parts of Coimbatore, The Nilgiris, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.
July 19: Very heavy rainfall expected in The Nilgiris and Coimbatore’s hilly regions. Moderate showers likely in Theni, Dindigul and Tenkasi.
