NDA allies BJP and TDP displayed differing views on the proposed national delimitation exercise based on population. During a Lok Sabha debate on the Constitution, TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu criticised the Centre's plan for the upcoming delimitation, raising concerns that southern states would be politically disadvantaged, while northern states would benefit from this exercise.

Devarayalu highlighted that the delimitation, if based on population, would result in a significant increase in seats for northern states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, from 169 to 324. Meanwhile, the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka would see a smaller increase, from 129 to 164 seats.

The TDP MP warned that such a move could undermine federalism and called for the inclusion of states with declining populations in the benefits of delimitation. He also demanded that governors be given a fixed time limit to approve bills passed by state assemblies.

The TDP MP also criticised Congress for its role in toppling state governments, citing the example of Andhra Pradesh, which was divided despite the state assembly rejecting the Centre's proposal.

The next Lok Sabha election, scheduled for 2029, may see an increase in seats due to the planned delimitation. However, under the current law, no changes can be made until 2026, with delimitation based on the 2027 census.
