'This Is My Life, Bye-Bye, Papa': On Video, 21-Year-Old Woman Jumps Into Chenab River In J-K's Doda

A 21-year-old woman allegedly jumped into the Chenab River from the Shiva Dal bridge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Saturday, shortly after speaking to her father over the phone and telling him, "This is my life."

The woman, identified as Payal Devi, daughter of Krishan Lal, reportedly jumped from the bridge near Prem Nagar at around 2 pm. A search operation involving police personnel, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams and local volunteers was launched soon after the incident.

According to India Today, Devi had gone to a fair earlier in the day and was returning home on a motorcycle with a person known to her from her village when the incident occurred.

A video of the incident has surfaced on social media and reportedly shows passersby trying to stop Devi from jumping. The footage captures her saying "bye-bye" before she allegedly jumped into the river.

Woman Told Father She Was Feeling Unwell

Devi had reportedly spoken to her father earlier in the day. According to Krishan Lal, she told him that she was feeling unwell and wanted to consult a doctor, the Times of India reported.

When the doctor was reportedly unavailable, Devi began returning home. She later travelled on a motorcycle with a person known to her, according to her father.

Lal said he subsequently received a call from the person accompanying Devi, who told him that she had run towards the river.

He then spoke to his daughter over the phone and repeatedly asked her what had happened. Lal said he also asked whether someone had said or done anything to her.

According to Lal, Devi responded, "No, papa. This is my own life. My heart tells me that I should go this way."

She then told her father, "Bye-bye, papa," before the call ended, Lal said.

Following the reported jump, police personnel, SDRF teams and local volunteers launched a search operation in the Chenab River. However, Devi's body has not been recovered so far, and the search operation remains underway.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Officials have not yet determined what prompted Devi to take the extreme step.
