Train Chart Update: The Indian Railways has announced a major change in its reservation chart preparation schedule to improve passenger convenience and streamline ticket booking. According to a recent circular issued by the Railway Board to all zonal offices, the new timings aim to provide passengers with earlier updates on seat confirmation and availability.
Under the revised system, the first reservation chart for trains departing between 5 AM and 2 PM will now be prepared by 9 PM on the previous night. This marks a significant shift from the earlier practice of generating the first chart just four hours before the scheduled departure.
For trains leaving between 2 PM and midnight, as well as those departing after midnight until 5 AM, the first reservation chart will now be created eight hours prior to the scheduled departure. However, there is no change in the timing of the second reservation chart, which will continue to be prepared 30 to 60 minutes before the train departs, as per the current practice.
Railway officials said this change will give passengers more time to check the status of their bookings and make alternative arrangements if required. It will also help reduce last-minute confusion and ease the workload of railway staff managing ticketing operations.

Importantly, these revised timings are applicable not just at the originating stations but will also be followed at remote charting locations, ensuring uniformity across the country.
Traditionally, the Indian Railways prepares two reservation charts per train. The first chart is used to provide an early update on confirmed berths and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status, while the second chart includes final adjustments based on last-minute cancellations or ticket bookings.
The Railway Board has directed all zones to implement the new charting schedule immediately. The move is expected to improve transparency, enhance passenger experience and aid in better planning for those relying on waitlisted or RAC tickets.
