Two trials of a new low-cost Counter Drone System in Hard Kill mode 'Bhargavastra' were conducted successfully by firing one rocket each, said the officials in a statement. One trial was conducted by firing two rockets in salvo mode within 2 seconds, it added.

What Is 'Bhargavastra'?

A new low-cost Counter Drone System in Hard Kill mode 'Bhargavastra', has been designed and developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), signifying a substantial leap in countering the escalating threat of drone swarms.

The micro rockets used in this counter-drone system underwent rigorous testing at the Seaward Firing Range, Gopalpur, achieving all designated objectives. Three trials were conducted for the rocket at Gopalpur on 13th May 2025 in presence of senior officials of Indian Army.

Two trials were conducted by firing one rocket each. One trial was conducted by firing two rockets in salvo mode within 2 seconds. All four rockets performed as expected and achieved the required launch parameters underscoring its pioneering technology in mitigating large-scale drone attacks: Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited.

Bhargavastra Capable To Detect Small Aerial Drones

Earlier On January 15, 2025, the authorities issued a statement, saying India successfully tested the indigenous 'Bhargavastra' micro-missile system, designed to counter swarm drones.

"Developed by 'Economic Explosives Limited', the system can detect small drones at over 6-km and take them down using guided micro munitions. In the two firings at the Gopalpur-on-Sea Firing Range, Bhargavastra successfully engaged two virtual targets beyond 2.5 km range. Following these preliminary trials, comprehensive trials are being scheduled, before the system is inducted into the Armed Forces," a statement released in January read.

"Bhargavastra has demonstrated its capability to detect small aerial drones and neutralise them using guided micro munitions. The system features simultaneous launch capability of over 64 micro missiles. Economic Explosives Limited is developing this mobile platform-mounted system for rapid deployment to threat areas. Its design accommodates operations across various terrains, including high-altitude regions, meeting specific military requirements," it added.

As the first micro missile-based system developed for the Army Air Defence (AAD), it addresses a crucial capability gap. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has also expressed interest in the system.
