Pending for the last 6 years, Chandigarh’s Tribune Flyover has moved closer to the execution process after it received in-principle approval from the central government following a revised cost estimate of Rs 240 crore. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has given the in-principle approval with central government is expected to provide formal approval within a month.
During the meeting held between officials from the engineering department of Chandigarh and the Transport Ministry in Delhi on Friday, it was said that the revised cost will be approved soon.
The original estimated cost of the project was Rs 137 crore when it was introduced in 2019, which has now escalated to Rs 240 crore, increasing by a 75% bump over six years.
UT chief engineer CB Ojha, who attended the meeting, confirmed the development. “The ministry asked us to reduce the cost by around Rs 1 crore, which we have done. Once we receive the formal approval, the project will be executed,” he said.
The upcoming 1.6-kilometre-long flyover will connect the GMCH-32 roundabout to the railway overbridge on Dakshin Marg, passing over Tribune Chowk.
Originally, the UT had planned to build a 7-kilometre-long flyover, which was later decreased to 3.5 kilometres, and ultimately was scaled down to 1.6 kilometres, while the estimated cost rose by 75 per cent.
The project suffered a delay after the Punjab Haryana High Court imposed a stay on tree cutting along the proposed route in November 2019, after the foundation stone was laid in May 2019.
The stay was lifted in May last year, after which the UT engineering department submitted a revised cost estimate of Rs 240 crore in March this year.
