Tripura Student Death In Dehradun: Fresh details have surfaced in the recent killing of 24-year-old MBA student Anjel Chakma, who belonged to Tripura and was studying at a private university in Dehradun. As per the investigation led by local police, a kada (metal bracelet) was used to assault the deceased. The incident took place on December 9, after a group of six people attacked Anjel after racially abusing him in a marketplace.
Tripura Student Death In Dehradun: What We Know So Far?
- A 24-year-old student, Anjel Chakma, died on December 26, days after he and his brother, Michael, were attacked by a group of six people in the Selakui area of Dehradun earlier this month.
The confrontation took place on December 9, after the group of attackers hurled racial slurs at Anjel and his brother. According to Anjel’s father, quoted by the PTI, the attackers called Anjel a ‘Chinese Momo’.
In response, Anjel stepped in and repeatedly told the attackers that he "was also Indian, not Chinese". However, the attackers assaulted him with knives, kada and other blunt objects.
Following the attack, Anjel was admitted to the Graphic Era Hospital in Dehradun, where he battled for his life for 17 days. However, the doctors could not save him, and he eventually succumbed to his injuries on Friday, December 26.
In the aftermath of the incident, a massive search operation was undertaken by the local police. So far, five out of the six accused have been arrested by the police, State Police ADGP V Murugesan said on Sunday. Out of the five arrested, three are adults: Suraj Khwas (22) from Manipur, Avinash Negi (25), and Sumit (25), along with two juveniles.
A separate team has been dispatched to nab the main accused, Yagya Awasthi, who has been hiding in Nepal since the incident took place. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for anyone who provides vital information leading to the arrest of the fugitive.
Tarun Chakma, a BSF jawan and the father of Anjel Chakma, who is currently posted in Tangjeng, Manipur, claimed that the police initially refused to register an FIR regarding the incident, as quoted by NDTV.
It was only two to three days later that the FIR was lodged after pressure from the All India Chakma Students Union.
Anjel’s father said, in a telephonic conversation with PTI, that his son had a broken neck, which led to his death. “I have lost my son; he should get justice,” he added.
Anjel Chakma’s last rites were held in Machmara village, Unakoti district, Tripura, on Saturday, December 27, amid demands for justice across Northeast India.
