On the verge of becoming the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay has warned that all 107 MLAs will resign if either of the two Dravida parties, MK Stalin-led DMK or Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK, stake a claim to form the government.
TVK won 108 seats, but since Vijay has clinched two seats, there are only 197 MLAs. Tamil Nadu is facing a huge political churn at the moment. The state has traditionally been bipolar when it comes to electoral contests. TVK's grand entry in the Dravida landscape, leaving behind the mammoths like DMK and AIADMK, has changed the dynamics altogether.
What Tamil Nadu is witnessing currently is its first experience. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, but 10 short of a majority. Even after Congress's support, the tally rises to 113, five short.
The TVK has argued that it should be called to form the government. However, despite his two approaches, the Governor has rejected his claim, asking him to prove the majority first.
Governor RV Arlekar has refused to allow Vijay to stake a claim, saying he lacked the numbers to do so.
The Governor also rejected the plan Vijay had presented to reach the majority mark. Arlekar has reportedly asked Vijay to provide a letter of support from 118 MLAs.
Vijay has again reached out to VCK, CPI and CPI-M, all having two seats each, for support.
DMK to take "emergency decision"?
Meanwhile, DMK held a legislative party meeting today where four resolutions were passed. Although the party lacks numbers and has expressed its intention to sit in Opposition, its resolutions reflect its readiness, hinting towards some ongoing inside deliberations.
The MLA-elects have authorised MK Stalin to take "emergency decisions." The DMK said, "Our primary aim is to avert another election, to have a stable government and not give room to communal forces". Stalin has also asked its MLAs to remain in Chennai till May 10.
