The government has launched a new dedicated AI platform called Bharat Vistar during the Union Budget 2026. This knowledge-sharing platform will help the farmers in a better transaction of knowledge related to modern farming techniques to boost their productivity. The application will combine agriculture datasets with advanced AI algorithms to generate personalised advisories for the farmers.
What Is Bharat Vistar?
Bharat Vistar, short form for Virtually Integrated System to Access Agricultural Resources, is a digital ecosystem that uses the farmer data, soil records and cropping practices. These advisories will cover a wide range of areas, including crop selection, soil health management, pest control, irrigation scheduling, weather forecasts, and even market trends.
The tool is being developed to integrate AgriStack and ICAR data into a unified AI system to provide real-time crop advice. Currently, the platform's mobile application has not been launched on the Google Play Store (for Android users) or the App Store (for iPhone users). Currently, the project's foundational website is available for download at the vistaar.da.gov.in to track official updates and integration guidelines.
One of the salient features of Bharat Vistar is the AI platform's multilingual capabilities. This allows a farmer in Tamil Nadu to get advisories in Tamil, while a cultivator in Punjab may prefer guidance in Punjabi. This feature will help democratise the knowledge-sharing system of the farmers.
Why Is This App Important For Farmers?
Agriculture has been one of the mainstays of the Indian economy, employing almost 45-46 per cent of the population. But the sector continues to be plagued by a plethora of challenges, ranging from erratic weather conditions to a lack of access to reliable information for the farmers. As a result, farmers have relied on knowledge from traditional working patterns, local networks and occasional government advisories to make decisions about crops, soil and market.
However, this traditional knowledge is facing a steep challenge given the rapid climate change, higher input costs and the need for higher productivity. The app will address these key issues and will help the farmers navigate these problems. Beyond the individual benefits, the app will also help create a framework for a robust agriculture policy.
