In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district, six labourers died after a section of an under-construction bridge fell on them in the early hours of Friday. The bridge reportedly fell due to heavy rainfall and strong surface winds, leading to panic among the locals. This bridge was being constructed to connect Morakandar (under Lalpur Police Station) with Mawaijar in Kurara. The police personnel, with the help of local residents, have launched the rescue operation.

As per the reports, the labourers were sleeping at the time of the incident and had little time to react. The incident has raised serious questions regarding the quality of the construction and adequacy of safety measures at the site. The officials stated that efforts are underway to extricate the injured trapped within the three pillars and to recover the bodies buried under the debris.

The further stated that all the deceased and injured individuals belong from Banda and Hamirpur districts. A team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has reached the scene, and a second team is also expected to arrive shortly, the officials informed.

"We reached the spot immediately after receiving the information around 2 am last night that a slab had collapsed and some people were trapped beneath it. SDRF is here, and rescue operations are underway. We have retrieved and identified five deceased," Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hamirpur, Arvind Kumar Verma, was quoted as saying by PTI.

Apart from this, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief over the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the affected families. He further directed senior officials to take necessary steps into the matter.
