Weather Update: Strong winds and light rain swept through parts of Delhi on Thursday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heatwave gripping the national capital.

The Delhi-NCR region experienced severe thunderstorms, with wind speeds peaking at 61 kmph at the Palam weather station. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperatures across major stations in Delhi dropped below normal on Thursday.

This sudden weather shift is due to the influence of a new Western Disturbance, which brought heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds to the capital, Haryana, and several parts of Uttar Pradesh. Multiple areas also reported heavy hailstorms.

Will it Rain in Delhi and UP Today?

The IMD has predicted continued relief from the heat across Northwest India. Over the next two to three days, maximum temperatures could decrease by 6 degrees C to 8 degrees C. Today, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are highly likely in many areas of Delhi-NCR and Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, a red alert for rain and severe thunderstorms has been issued for 15 states.

Through May 31, strong thunderstorms are expected to impact multiple regions across Northwest, Central, and Eastern India. In Uttar Pradesh alone, a red alert for severe thunderstorms has been issued for 43 districts.

Temperature Soars Up To 47 Degrees In Rajasthan, UP

On Thursday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 45 in Delhi and 47.5 degrees Celsius in Banda, UP. The mercury reached 47.1 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. This change in weather has come after several days of severe heat.

The temperature remained above 45 degrees Celsius in six districts of the state. Meanwhile, Sirsa in Haryana and Faridkot in Punjab recorded temperatures of 45.4 degrees Celsius. At many places, the weather started changing after afternoon itself.

By Thursday afternoon, the weather began to shift. Delhi saw dark clouds, strong winds, and light rain. However, neighboring states faced harsher conditions: Charkhi Dadri in Haryana experienced heavy rain and a hailstorm, while areas in Rewari (including Bawal, Kund, and Khol) saw hail falling for about five minutes.

Damage and Casualties Reported Across States

The severe weather has unfortunately caused damage and casualties. According to Jagran.com, tragedy struck Haryana’s Nuh district when strong winds caused a school wall to collapse in Tapkan village and a house to collapse in Chandeni village. Two children lost their lives, and four others were injured.

In Western Uttar Pradesh and the Bundelkhand region, the weather varied between rain and heavy hail. In Moradabad district, tree branches broke due to the thunderstorm, and electricity poles also fell at several locations. Hail also fell heavily and it rained in Budaun. On the other hand, late at night, drizzling started after strong winds in Lucknow and surrounding districts.

Orange Alert Issued in Himachal Pradesh

The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh, warning of hail, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. The alert covers select areas within five districts: Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmour.
