Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is set to charge a whopping 12% interest on dues from the defaulters who have not paid house taxes for years. The corporation has prepared a long list of house owners and government departments that have not paid taxes for several years. The interest on unpaid dues will be charged under Section 221 of the Nagar Nigam Act from the new financial year.

The PMC had a list of 33,000 defaulters last year, with 13,000 of these pending bills being cleared by building owners before the end of the financial year 2024-25, the Hindustan Times quoted PMC chief tax officer (CTO) PK Dwivedi.

“We have defaulters in different categories, i.e., unpaid bills within ₹5,000, between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000, etc. Nearly 450 residents of the city have unpaid bills exceeding ₹one lakh. In most cases, unpaid bills are linked to property disputes,” the report added, citing Dwivedi.

The corporation is preparing a list of defaulters separately for domestic and government properties to ensure smooth and time-bound functioning. Specific formats for different government departments are being developed.

Meetings will be held with departmental heads to ensure the timely payment of dues. “In any case, we will try to ensure that government departments make payments within the first quarter of the year,” the report further quoted CTO Dwivedi.

According to the report, talks with senior officials of the power department are underway as the number of offices and substations before Mahakumbh has increased to 65 from the earlier 51. Now the Power department will have to pay tax for 14 extra buildings as well.
