The Punjab Police on Wednesday arrested 59 people for smuggling drugs and recovered 1.6 kg of heroin and Rs 5.3 lakh drug money from them. The arrest has been made across the state. The officials said that the apprehensions and recoveries were made in line with the state government’s crackdown on drug penetration in the state under‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’.
With the arrest of 59 smugglers on Wednesday, the operation entered its 33rd day. A total of 4,765 arrests had been made under this initiative, the Hindustan Times quoted officials.
Special Director General of police (DGP law and order) Arpit Shukla said over 200 teams comprising more than 1,400 police personnel conducted raids at nearly 497 locations across the state. 36 FIRs have been registered, and police have thoroughly checked 567 persons based on suspicion, the report added.
Informing about the state government’s strategy to curb escalating drug smuggling in the region, the special DGP said that the state government is enforcing a three-pronged strategy — enforcement, de-addiction and prevention (EDP) — to eradicate drugs. He further said that police have convinced four people to leave addiction and undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
Senior Woman Constable Arrested With Drug
In a separate case, the Punjab police arrested a senior police constable, Amandeep Kaur, on Wednesday with 18 grams of heroin from Bhatinda.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, Bathinda deputy superintendent of police (DSP City 1) Harbans Singh Dhaliwal said the accused was driving an SUV when a team of the police and anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) intercepted the vehicle during a checking drive on Badal Road and seized the drug.
