In a shocking incident from Lalitpur Medical College, stray dogs were reportedly seen tearing apart a newborn baby on February 11. The baby was reportedly declared dead by the hospital. The infant was born on February 9 at the District Women's Hospital at Lalitpur Medical College. The baby was admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) as the child was underweight and unwell.
“The child was born with congenital defects. The child's head wasn't fully developed. He didn't have a spine either and weighed 1.3kg. He was alive and had a heart rate of 80 beats per minute (bpm) when we moved him to SNCU. We were not sure if the child would survive,” NDTV quoted Dr Meenakshi Singh, Chief Medical Officer as saying.
Hospital staff received news about the dog attack on Tuesday afternoon and upon investigation, it was found that a child’s body without a head was lying on the ground. Doctors declared the newborn to be dead by the evening and subsequently handed over the child to the family.

Hospital authorities accused the family of abandoning the infant and pointed out the negligence of the family in leaving the newborn unattended, which allowed the dogs to access the body.
“We believe the family threw the child's body in a plastic bag. The child had the hospital tag attached which is how we could identify,” said Dr Singh.
Following the incident, Lalitpur Medical College Principal D Nath has initiated an internal inquiry by forming a committee of four doctors. He issued an order to send the complete investigation report related to the newborn within 24 hours.
