A controversy sparked on Sunday after Uttarakhand BJP leader and Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal alleged that some non-Hindu elements are maligning the image of Kedarnath temple, adding that their entry in the temple premises should be banned. The opposition leaders stated that the Kedarnath MLA was trying to divide the society on the basis of religion.

"Some non-Hindu elements are attempting to damage the sanctity of Kedarnath Dham," Nautiyal was quoted as saying by India Today. She stated that a meeting was held recently by minister-in-charge Saurabh Bahuguna with several officials and local residents.

The locals pointed out that there are some non-Hindu elements who were trying to tarnish the image of the temple. She further said that these activities are unacceptable, and such individuals should be identified, and their entry should be barred from entering the site. The remarks from the saffron party leader surfaced after the meeting where the matter was discussed.

She stated that the activities to malign the image of the temple are done by "non-Hindus who come from outside". "If some people are doing anything that may malign the image of Kedarnath Dham, then their entry should be banned. They are definitely non-Hindus who come from outside and get involved in such activities to defame the dham," she said.

However, the Congress leaders stated that the BJP leaders are trying to divide the society as they have nothing to speak on development. Congress senior leader and ex-Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Harish Rawat said that the saffron party leaders are in the habit of making sensational remarks.

"It is a habit of the BJP leaders to make sensational remarks. Uttarakhand is a 'devbhoomi' and how long will you attach everything with religion? They are doing this because they don't have anything to tell people," Rawat was quoted as saying by India Today.
