The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as a dominant force in the Panchayat elections held in Uttarakhand, winning a significant number of seats across 12 districts, except Haridwar. However, the party's performance was not uniform, with Congress showing its influence in districts like Dehradun, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar.
Uttarakhand Panchayat Election: Electoral Contest Remained Between Cong And BJP
The electoral contest for control of the three-tier panchayats in the state was mainly between the BJP and the Congress. It's worth noting that neither party fielded candidates directly in the Panchayat elections.
BJP's Performance
The BJP is claiming to have an edge in districts like Pauri, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar, Champawat, Pithoragarh, and Almora. The party's performance in the Panchayat elections is seen as a significant boost after its success in the municipal elections held a few months ago, where it captured the post of mayor in 10 out of 11 municipal corporations.

Congress's Stronghold In Uttarakhand Panchayat Elections
Despite facing difficulties in municipal corporations, Congress has shown its stronghold in municipal bodies adjoining rural areas. The party's efforts to highlight the anti-incumbency factor seem to have paid off in some districts.
The fate of 34,151 candidates was decided on Thursday, with 22,429 representatives already elected unopposed in the Panchayats. A total of 69 per cent of voters cast their vote in the two phases, with more women participating in the voting than men. The BJP is counting on this activism of women's power in its favour.
Claims And Counter-Claims
While the BJP is claiming a significant victory, Congress has also claimed a good performance in the election. The results of the Panchayat elections will have a significant impact on the politics of the state and both parties.
The BJP's success in the Panchayat elections can be seen as a significant boost to the party's morale, while Congress will be looking to regroup and strategise for future elections.
