Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday directed the officials to investigate the funding of the 136 madrasas after they were sealed for not being registered with the education department. The government estimates suggest that while there are a total of 450 registered madrasas in the state, 500 are being operated without the recognition of the education department.
The officials stated that the madrasas that are not registered with the education department are being run under the Societies Registration Act. “Action against illegal madrasas, unauthorised shrines, and encroachments will continue. Unregistered madrasas have been reported in towns bordering Uttar Pradesh, and such unauthorised institutions pose a serious security concern,” a government advisory suggested.

However, the state secretary for Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, Khurshid Ahmed, claimed that the managers of these madrasas were not given any prior notice, adding that the action from the state government is illegal. He also pointed out that the action is being taken during Ramadan when the children are not at home.
“For a large-scale drive like this, the government needs to pass an order, but that has not happened. The sealing is taking place during Ramadan when the children are away at their homes. Several institutions had closed after the year-end exams. What needs to be seen is if the children will be able to assimilate with other schools and curriculum when they get transferred,” Ahmed was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Apart from this, Madrasa Board chairperson Mufti Shamoom Qasmi said that the children from these madrasas will be shifted to other nearby madrasas or schools. He also urged the authorities to initiate the action soon to avoid any study gap for these students.
“We will look into how many children study here after the report on the drive is submitted. The children are entitled to the right to education, and we will make sure it is not violated,” Qasmi was quoted as saying by the Indian Express. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami had clarified that strong action will be taken against the institutes functioning without being registered with the education board.
