Notably, PM Modi had hailed the movie, which portrays the life and valour of Maratha ruler Sambhaji Maharaj.

“It is Maharashtra and Mumbai which has given a new height to Marathi as well as Hindi cinema. And these days, Chhaava is making waves throughout the country (In dino to Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai). The introduction of Sambhaji Maharaj’s valour in this form has been made by Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel," he said while addressing Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in New Delhi.

Notably, the move Chhaava created a massive stir in the political landscape of the country, with people expressing their ire against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Hindu groups held agitations across Maharashtra seeking removal from Aurangzeb’s tomb from Sambhaji Nagar. A massive violence erupted in Nagpur in the backdrop of this protest. The rumours, that a sacred cloth inscribed with Ayat was burnt, triggered unrest in the area. Curfew was unleashed in the city after incidents of arson and stone pelting.
