Uttarakhand Weather: Heavy rains continues to lash several parts of Uttarakhand on July 31, with Dehradun, Haridwar, and Nainital among the worst-affected districts. The situation turned critical on the Kedarnath route after a 70-metre stretch of road near Sonprayag was washed away, halting the Kedarnath Yatra. With landslides and overflowing drains causing chaos in multiple areas, authorities have issued a yellow alert across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert from July 31 to August 4 for all 13 districts of Uttarakhand including Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Nainital, and Bageshwar warning of isolated heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning. Light to moderate showers are expected to continue across most districts till August 6.
Dehradun remained under dense cloud cover since morning, with heavy evening showers drenching many parts of the city. Areas like Maldevta and Sahastradhara witnessed moderate rain, while urban localities reported overflowing drains, submerged roads, and waterlogged intersections. The rainwater, mixed with drain overflow, created significant problems for pedestrians and commuters. On Wednesday, Dehradun recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8 degrees C and a minimum of 23.8 degrees C. In comparison, temperatures in Udham Singh Nagar peaked at 33.7 degrees C and dropped to 25.6 degrees C, while Mukteshwar stayed cooler at 19.6 degrees C and 15.3 degrees C respectively.

The most alarming development came from the Kedarnath Yatra route. Continuous rainfall caused severe damage to the Gaurikund highway, with a 70-metre stretch being swept away ahead of Sonprayag. As a result, the yatra has been suspended since Tuesday. Over 3,000 pilgrims were halted at Sonprayag, while another 3,000 stranded in Gaurikund were safely evacuated by SDRF teams using an emergency trail. However, recurring landslides have slowed down road repair work, and it may take another 2–3 days to restore access.

To make matters worse, even the alternative pedestrian trail in the area has been damaged. Officials have advised pilgrims to delay their journey and instead visit other nearby religious destinations for the time being. In Rudraprayag, the safety wall of a temporary wooden bridge leading to the second Kedar, Madhyameshwar, was damaged, suspending movement there as well.
Meanwhile, in Pauri district, landslides were reported at multiple locations along the Kandakhal–Chandakhal–Banali road, where chunks of the hillside broke off and fell onto the motor road, further adding to the region’s weather woes.
