Uttarakhand is experiencing a harsh winter, with dense fog and cold days affecting the plains and creating problems in the mountainous areas. Many people are resorting to bonfires and warm clothes to cope with the shivering temperatures, which have dropped below normal levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the weather is expected to remain dry for the next two days. The met department has also issued a yellow alert for the plains of Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Pauri and Dehradun, warning of dense fog and cold day conditions.
In Roorkee, the cold wave significantly decreased the temperatures of the city and surrounding areas. People are avoiding going out of their homes unless necessary and are seen burning bonfires on the roadside to keep themselves warm. On Thursday, the maximum temperature of the city was recorded at 12 degrees Celsius, which was six degrees Celsius below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.5 degrees Celsius.
The Rural Agriculture Weather Service Project, operated by the Water Resources Development and Management Department of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee also informed that the cold wave will continue on Friday as well.
