Uttarakhand Weather Update: After two days of snowfall and rainfall, some parts of Uttarakhand witnessed clear skies and bright sunshine, bringing relief to residents and travellers. However, the respite may be short-lived as a cold wave is expected to intensify with northwestern winds descending from the Himalayas.
The heavy rain and snowfall affected normal life in the state, especially those living in hilly areas.
While most districts, including Dehradun, Pauri, and Nainital, are likely to remain dry, isolated areas in Uttarkashi and Chamoli could witness light rainfall.
Meanwhile, The Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), issued an orange alert for an avalanche in Chamoli and four other districts including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, and Bageshwar.
Mohammad Obaidullah Ansari, Joint Chief Executive Officer of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, has alerted Chamoli’s district magistrate about an orange alert (level 3) issued by the DGRE. He urged the official to implement necessary safety and precautionary measures in response to the warning.
Dehradun witnessed significant rainfall from Friday morning to Saturday morning, accumulating an average of 22.5 mm, with an additional 10.2 mm recorded throughout the day on Saturday. The last record-breaking rainfall was 23.4 mm in December 2014, which remains the highest single-day rainfall for the month. In fact, 2014 also marked the year when the region experienced its highest monthly rainfall in the past decade.
Due to the forecast of heavy snowfall and a coldwave issued by the India Meteorological Centre in Dehradun, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari has announced a holiday for all government, non-government, and private schools, from class 1 to 12, as well as Anganwadi centres in the district on Saturday, December 28.
