The much-anticipated launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has been postponed, with the Indian Railways Ministry citing several unresolved issues related to interior furnishings, design specifications, and safety compliance. Originally scheduled for an October 2025 rollout, the premium sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat series will now undergo further review and modifications before entering service.
According to a PTI report, the Railway Board flagged several concerns regarding the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train’s interior quality and workmanship to the Director General of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the General Managers of all railway zones.
The board noted issues such as sharp edges and corners near the berthing area, poorly designed window curtain handles, and “pigeon pockets” between berth connectors that could lead to cleaning difficulties. It directed officials to take corrective measures in the existing rake and implement necessary design improvements in future rakes.
Does This Mean Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains Will Be Delayed?
The railway board has officially given a green light for the operations of the 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper rake. However, the board has directed that the changes that have been flagged must be resolved before the train can begin full commercial services.
"Suitable setting of temperature inside coaches shall be maintained to ensure comfortable conditions to passengers, considering ambient conditions and frequent opening & closing of doors," it added.
The Railway Ministry also flagged several safety measures:
Fire safety measures
Installation of the Kavach 4.0
Reliable communication between the Loco pilot, the train manager and the station master
Proper maintenance of the braking system
The Railway Ministry further stated that zones must ensure trained technical personnel are available along the route and that the semi-permanent coupler can be disengaged within 15 minutes in case of emergencies.
The ministry also directed that regular announcements be made via the PA system, instructing all non-passengers to disembark before departure. Additionally, pre-recorded passenger safety messages in three languages, regional, Hindi, and English should be broadcast during the journey to raise awareness about personal safety norms.
