The year 2026 is set to bring in transformative change in rail development across Jammu and Kashmir. Indian Railways has made significant investments to strengthen and expand the region’s rail network. Several railway projects are expected to be completed in 2026, promising improved passenger amenities while giving a major boost to tourism, trade, and industrial growth in the region.
The modernisation of Jammu Railway Station is expected to be completed in 2026. This project will include the construction of a second entrance to the station, facilitating passenger movement and reducing congestion. The number of platforms at the station will also be increased from three to seven.
The expanded station complex will feature modern waiting rooms, improved parking, elevators, escalators, clean toilets, a digital information system, and modern security features. This transformation will be a significant step toward elevating Jammu Railway Station to the ranks of major modern stations in North India. Overall, the year 2026 could prove to be a milestone in the field of rail development for Jammu and Kashmir.
With modern railway stations, new train services, improved connectivity, and industrial projects, Indian Railways is poised to play a vital role in the region's socio-economic development. The new rail projects will not only ease passenger travel but also further connect Jammu and Kashmir with the mainstream of development.
Udhampur Railway Station, included in the list of the country's Amrit Railway Stations, will also see a new look in the year 2026. The station is being equipped with state-of-the-art passenger amenities. The beautification of the station building, improved platforms, shelters, parking, and passenger amenities are expected to be completed this year.
Vande Bharat Express Will Run From Jammu
One of the biggest achievements of the year 2026 is the launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Jammu and Srinagar. Until now, the Vande Bharat Express was limited to Katra, but once the Kashmir rail link is fully operational, the train will run directly from Jammu to Srinagar. Additionally, the Railways is working on plans to introduce two more new trains between Jammu and Kashmir.
Along with this, the plan to run DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) train between Katra and Srinagar is also expected to be completed this year, which will provide economical and regular rail service to the local passengers.
Connectivity In Jammu and Kashmir To Change With New Rail Route
New routes are also being considered to expand the rail network in Jammu and Kashmir. Among these are the Jammu-Poonch and Jammu-Billawar rail lines. If approved, these projects will directly connect remote and border areas to the rail network, which will not only facilitate transportation but also generate economic development and new employment opportunities.
Railway Line Damaged By Floods
The railway line between Kathua and Madhopur was severely damaged by devastating floods in September 2025. Rail traffic on this route has been disrupted for several months. The railways have launched repair work on a war footing.
The target is to complete it by March 2026. Once the line is restored, trains will resume operating on this section, providing relief to passengers as well as freight traffic.
