Congress Lok Sabha MP from Maharashtra’s Nanded, Vasant Chavan, on Monday passed away due to a prolonged illness. He had been suffering from a respiratory problem for a long time and was admitted to KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad for treatment. His condition suddenly deteriorated on Sunday and he died this morning.

The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) announced that Chavan’s last rites would be performed in Nanded.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole has expressed anguish over Chavan’s demise.

“A heartfelt tribute! The news of the demise of senior leader of Congress party, MP of Nanded Lok Sabha Constituency Vasantraoji Chavan is very shocking. He always remained loyal to the Congress party even in adverse conditions and brought the idea of the Congress party home. Vasantraoji pays tribute to Chavan Saheb with a heavy heart. The entire Congress party is with the Chavan family in this grief,” Patole posed on X.

Vasant Chavan first entered the Maharashtra Assembly in 2009 by winning the Naygaon Assembly seat as an independent candidate. His political career rose steadily after that. He joined the Congress party in September 2014. Before joining the grand old party, he was appointed to the Public Accounts Committee in May.

In the 2014 Assembly elections, he won the Naygaon seat again. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he secured victory from the Nanded Lok Sabha seat. He defeated sitting BJP MP Pratap Patil Chikhalikar by a margin of 59,442 votes.
