Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday, citing health reasons. He submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu under Article 67(a) of the Constitution. Dhankhar stated that he is stepping down with immediate effect to prioritise his health and follow medical advice.

He had assumed office on August 11, 2022, and served as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha during his tenure. His resignation will be effective once accepted by the President.

Who Elects The Vice President?

The Vice President of India is elected by an Electoral College made up of members from both Houses of Parliament, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This includes both elected and nominated members.

State legislative assemblies are not part of this process, unlike in presidential elections.

How Does the Voting Process Work?

The election is conducted through the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote (STV) and secret ballot.

Instead of voting for just one candidate, MPs mark their order of preferences on the ballot paper. If no candidate secures a majority in the first round, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated and second-preference votes are counted. This continues until a candidate gets the required majority.

Eligibility Criteria For Vice President

To be eligible for the post, a candidate must:

- Be a citizen of India

- Be at least 35 years old

- Be qualified to be elected as a Rajya Sabha member

- Not hold any office of profit under the central or state government

Term And Vacancy

The Vice President serves a five-year term, unless removed, resigns, dies or is disqualified. If an MP is elected as Vice President, they must vacate their Parliament seat on assuming office.
