Vijayakanth Death: The mortal remains of actor Vijayakanth were brought to Island Ground, Anna Salai on Friday morning. The mortal remains will be kept at Island Ground from 6 AM to 1 PM for the public to pay their last respects.

Earlier, the mortal remains of the DMDK chief were kept at the DMDK office, where multiple political leaders including Tamil Nadu minister Ranipet R Gandhi, actors, and others came to pay their tributes. The 71-year-old DMDK president and actor Vijayakanth passed away in Chennai on Thursday after testing positive for COVID-19.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Vijaykanth on his demise and said he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

"Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti," PM Modi wrote on X.

In November this year, Vijayakanth, Suffering from coughing and throat pain, was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai after his health deteriorated. He was kept under the observation of doctors for 14 days.

Vijayakanth, popularly known as "Captain", had a successful career in the Tamil cinema. Before going into politics, he appeared in 154 films. Vijayakanth brought about revolutionary changes in the South Indian cinema industry while he was holding a position at Nadigar Sangam, which was formerly known as the South Indian Artists' Association (SIAA). He represented the constituencies of Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam as a member of the Legislative Assembly twice.
