VK Pandian, ex-IAS officer and close aide of former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on Sunday, announced his departure from active politics after Biju Janata Dal (BJD)'s defeat in the state assembly elections. Chairman of ambitious 5-T and Nabin Odisha, Pandian joined the party in November 2023 and accompanied CM Patnaik in the election campaigning for state as well as Lok Sabha elections, held this year.

While announcing his decision, Pandian apologised to the workers and leaders of BJD for the failure of the party's campaign. He further said that his heart will always belong to the people of Odisha and Lord Jagannath.

"...Now consciously I decide to withdraw myself from active politics. I am sorry if I have hurt anyone on this journey. I am sorry if this campaign narrative against me has had a part to play in BJD's loss...," he said in a video message posted on X.

He recounted his 12 years working with former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, hailing him as a visionary leader who pulled Odisha out of the clutches of poverty, unemployment and under-development. Pandian further said that he had not accumulated any wealth while working in the state.

This came days after former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik defended Pandian and asserted that he was not responsible for the party's poll debacle. Patnaik also praised his confidant, saying he did an "excellent job."

"...I have always clearly said that when they asked me about my successor, I have said clearly that it is not Mr Pandian. I repeat it that the people of Odisha will decide my successor."

He says, "...There has been some criticism of Mr Pandian. This is unfortunate...Mr Pandian joined the party but has not held any posts. He did not fight in these elections from any constituency. I have always clearly said that when they asked me about my successor, I have said clearly that it is not Mr Pandian. I repeat again that the people of Odisha will decide my successor," Patnaik said.
