Odisha:  The BJP will select the Chief Minister of Odisha after Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony as Prime Minister for the third straight term on June 9, said a senior party leader, as reported by PTI. The state unit chief of BJP, Manmohan Samal, hinted at a delay of two more days in deciding who will reign the state. Notably, the BJP, for the first time in the state's electoral history, emerged victorious in assembly elections, winning 78 of the 147-member Odisha assembly.

"The parliamentary party of the BJP will select the chief minister at its meeting," Samal said, adding that he does "not have any idea who the next chief minister of the state will be."

“I had gone to Delhi to attend a meeting to select the NDA's parliamentary party leader and Lok Sabha leader. All newly elected MPs from the state were present there. We also attended other party programs arranged in Delhi,” he said while interacting with the media at the airport, quoted PTI.

Along with the impressive show in the state assembly, the BJP has also put up a grand performance in the Lok Sabha election, winning 20 out of 21 seats.

Samal also mentioned that, as the president of the Odisha BJP, he has been coordinating with all stakeholders to arrange the oath-taking function. The BJP leader stated that the party's parliamentary group has not yet selected the next Chief Minister of Odisha.

“Wait for two more days and you will be informed about the party's decision on the new chief minister. There are highly experienced leaders of the party at the Centre and they will take the decision keeping the interest of the state in mind,” he said.

Asked whether he was in the race for the chief minister's post, Samal said, “I am not... I am just executing whatever responsibility is assigned to me,” said Samal, who was defeated in Chandbali in the recently concluded Odisha assembly elections.
