Wayanad Landslides: The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday pledged the construction of more than 100 houses by his party in the landslide-affected areas of Kerala's Wayanad district.
He further said, "Kerala has not seen this type of tragedy in one area. Will raise it in Delhi." The Lok Sabha member, who is currently in Wayanad, made the remark while speaking to reporters after a meeting with officials of the district administration and the panchayat, along with Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other senior Congress leaders.
Rahul and Priyanka met the survivors of the tragedy on Thursday. On Friday, Kerala Higher Education Department Minister R Bindu said that the National Service Scheme (NSS) will volunteer in the construction of houses for as many as 150 such families that lost their homes in the devastating landslides.
Speaking to reporters in Kerala's Thrissur, Bindu said that this will be one of the largest volunteering activities undertaken by the NSS. Two massive landslides hit Wayanad's Chooralmala and Mundakkai in the wee hours of Tuesday, causing widespread loss of lives and property in the region.
As of Friday, the death toll due to the natural calamity has crossed the 300 mark, according to state health minister Veena George. In the morning, Kerala ADGP MR Ajith Kumar said that approximately 300 people remained missing since the outset of the tragedy.
