'We Will See': Kharge Reacts To 'One Nation, One Election' Bill After Union Cabinet Approval

One Nation, One Election: A day after the Union cabinet approved the 'One Nation, One Election' bill, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said that the Congress will study the details of the bill before commenting on it. He also emphasised that the opposition parties are concerned because of the use of autonomous bodies against them. 

In a response to the question related to 'One Nation, One Election,' Kharge said, "We will see what is in the bill. How they will do it, we will see all the things, and then we will react to it..." He also criticised the central government for mishandling the institutions. He said that many unconstitutional things are going on under the NDA government.

"We have put this condition that there should be a discussion on the Constitution. Many unconstitutional things are going on, many autonomous bodies are being misused, the governance in the country is not good, so we want a debate so that everyone can know how the governance is going on," Kharge was quoted as saying by ANI.

The Union cabinet on Thursday approved the 'One Nation, One Election', a vital step towards the change in the electoral process of our country. The approval from the cabinet paves the way for the bill to be discussed in the ongoing winter session of the parliament before referring it to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further scrutiny, reported Mint, citing several reports.

'One Nation, One Election' bill suggests that the Lok Sabha, the Assembly, and the local body (urban or rural) elections will be held in the same year, if not at the same time. The BJP has been vocal about the implementation of the bill for several years, and they claim that the bill can transform the electoral process by bringing major changes, including cost cutting.

The panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind submitted the report in March this year. The panel said in the report that simultaneous elections could ‘transform the electoral process.’
