Weather Update Today: Several Indian states are experiencing heavy rainfall as the monsoon reaches its peak. Regions affected include eastern Rajasthan, western Madhya Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, north interior Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a depression forming in the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal near south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh on September 26, likely to make landfall around September 27.
Maharashtra Weather
Mumbai and surrounding areas woke up to heavy rainfall on Monday. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and other parts of the Konkan belt. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Palghar, and Sindhudurg.
Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are forecast to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next five days. Pune has recorded rain as festivities for Navratri and Durga Puja begin. The rainfall is linked to a low-pressure area and cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.
West Bengal Weather
Southern districts of West Bengal are expected to receive heavy rainfall with thunderstorms due to a low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts across several districts. South 24 Parganas has an orange alert, while Kolkata, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Malda are under yellow alerts. On September 23, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) is expected in East and West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, and Bankura.
Karnataka Weather
Most districts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, are expected to receive rain over the next week. A yellow alert has been issued for Bagalkot, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgiri districts. Heavy rain is forecast for Shivamogga, Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi after September 27.
Monsoon Overview
Until September 17, India has recorded 8% more rainfall than normal overall. However, rainfall distribution has been uneven. North-west, central, and southern peninsular regions received above-normal rainfall, while the east and north-east received about 18% less. Uttar Pradesh recorded an average of 695.6 mm, approximately 4% below normal.
