Weather Update: The heavy rainfall and lightning created havoc despite the slow pace of the monsoon, as at least 16 people lost their lives across the country in the past 24 hours. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon is expected to advance from Telangana and reach Chhattisgarh on June 23. The weather department stated that several western and northern states are likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall in the upcoming days.
As per the weather department, the monsoon has reached 19 states so far but has been stuck in Telangana since June 8. Its slow movement has led to trouble in the northern states as the temperature in several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan, has largely remained above 40 degrees Celsius. However, the arrival of the monsoon is likely to lower the temperature, providing much-needed relief from the heat.

According to the weather department, the necessary systems for the monsoon have become active in Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of Chhattisgarh. It further stated that the monsoon is expected to advance into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and other parts of the country over the next 4-5 days. The IMD has issued a storm and rain alert in 12 districts of Rajasthan, including Kota, Udaipur, and Ajmer, on Saturday.
The weather department stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till June 21. It further stated that along with heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Karnataka for the next few days.
The IMD has advised the residents to follow the guidelines and limit their outings during the rainfall to avoid any inconveniences. It also asked the fishermen of the coastal regions to avoid any financial activities during the rainfall or strong surface winds.
