A political row erupted in West Bengal between the ruling TMC and BJP after the alleged vandalism of a Kali idol at Kakdwip near Sundarbans. The BJP has slammed the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for doing appeasement politics. The saffron party has also slammed the state police for taking the idol in a police van after the incident, leading to an alleged outrage among the locals. However, the state government stated that the police have already given clarification on the issue, further urging the opposition parties to not politicise the issue.

While slamming the government for "lawlessness", BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya labelled the incident shameful, adding that the police also tried to intimidate the villagers. "Mamata Banerjee's police took away Maa Kali in a prison van! Shame, shame - there's no place to hide this disgrace," Malviya posted on X. "Police initially intimidated villagers and locked the temple gates, but had to reopen them after strong protests from locals," he added.

However, the TMC stated that the BJP was trying to politicise the issue, adding that the police have already issued clarification. "The police have explained it. Some people are trying to play distorted politics out of it. Action is being taken by police," the ruling party stated. Apart from this, the police stated that some people were trying to spread misinformation, warning them of strict action.

“Efforts are being made from certain quarters to spread misinformation about an incident in Kakdwip,” the police stated. "Efforts are on to identify those behind the mischief, and stern action will be taken against those responsible,” the authority added.
