West Bengal Shocker: Engineering Student Raped In Kolkata Days After Durgapur Gangrape Case; Classmate Arrested

West Bengal: A second-year student of a private engineering college was allegedly raped in Kolkata, days after the horrific Durgapur gangrape case. According to the police, the engineering student was raped by her classmate, who has been arrested from the Anandpur area in the southern part of the city.

The woman, who had come to West Bengal for her studies, was allegedly raped by her classmate. She filed a complaint against him at the Anandapur Police Station, alleging that she lost consciousness after consuming drinks laced with drugs and was later raped by the accused, news agency PTI quoted a senior official as saying.

“The student in her complaint alleged that she was staying in a rented flat in Anandapur, where the accused came and mixed drugs in her drinks. She became unconscious after drinking it and was later raped by her classmate,” the officer said.

The accused went into hiding for several days, the officer said, adding that he was arrested upon returning to his residence in Anandpur. He was produced before a city court, where the judge ordered the accused to be remanded in police custody till October 22.

“We have started the investigation, and the details of what happened will be revealed soon,” the officer added.

This incident comes days after a second-year medical student of a private medical college in Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus after she went out with her male friend for dinner. Following the incident, the police arrested six individuals, including the male friend of the survivor.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the incident “shocking, and questioned why she ventured out “at midnight” with her male friend. “She was studying in a private medical college. Whose responsibility is it? How did she come out at 12.30 am? The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night,” she said.
